STEAM Classes
Milestones offers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) classes to our students. STEAM is based on the idea of educating students in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the five disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEAM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. STEAM class increases collaboration and motivation to learn in diverse interests and aid in therapeutic needs. Students earn science, math, and art credit, and the STEAM faculty include math, science, and art teachers, as well as an Occupational Therapist and a Speech-Language Pathologist. The use of authentic, project-based learning allows the teaching of 21st-century skills without relying upon dry, direct instruction techniques which have not served the population. The thematic units cover infectious disease, extra-planetary colonization, and forensics. Our students grow both in knowledge and in life skills. The rigorous projects empower the OT and SLP to teach strategies and study skills. With their partnership, the teachers develop a community-based instruction model. The integration of multiple curriculum areas with therapeutics enhance their ability to access both academics and clinical services.
